Plant viruses cause devastating diseases with tremendous economic losses in many crops worldwide. Our team is interested in different pathogenic viruses affecting horticultural crops, including cucumoviruses, potyviruses, ipomoviruses, criniviruses and begomoviruses, which are all transmitted by hemipteran insects such as aphids and whiteflies. In addition to studying pathogenesis and plant defensive mechanisms, we aim to advance the knowledge on vector-related ecological aspects that could influence the dissemination of viruses by insects. Among other innovative approaches, we are exploring the use of virus-like particles to interfere with transmission, and the hypothetical role of virus-derived small RNAs for cross-kingdom manipulation of insect vectors.
